Thailand is rich in nation parks, boasting around 112 of them. Many more were in the pipeline before the 1997 economic crash. The latest trend is to link parks and wildlife reserves together into larger 'forest complexes', regional units with local community groups taking at least partail responsibility for conservation. Thailand's Western Forest Complex (Wefcom), for example, joins together nine national parks, six wildlife sanctuaries and two proposed nation parks, convering 18,720 sq km.
